Orbiter ride10/12/2023 ![]() The coordinate system of the ride is given as shown and it is assumed that the ride is horizontal. N is the normal force between the rider's body and the external wall of the Gravitron Θ is the angle of lean which the external wall of the Gravitron makes with the verticalį is the friction force between the rider's body and the external wall of the Gravitron R is the radius of rotation measured from the center of rotation of the Gravitron to the center of mass of the rider (represented by the gray rectangle). G is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s 2) W is the angular velocity of the Gravitron The figure below shows a schematic of the ride. In this ride people lean against the external wall and the force generated by centriptetal acceleration, during rotation, keeps the riders from sliding down the wall. So having an idea of how much force the body will experience on a ride is a key factor when deciding how fast, how high, or how big a radius is required.Ĭlick on the links below to learn about the physics involved in these particular rides.įerris Wheel Physics Roller Coaster Physics The GravitronĪnother popular amusement park ride is the Gravitron. A solid understanding of the physics is necessary for the designers in order to push the safety limits for humans as much as possible. However, designing these rides is much more than just putting in random loops on a track. But it is precisely these unusual sensations of having your body pushed and pulled in different directions, that keeps people coming back for more. It's quite different from what we experience on a daily basis. There are turns, twists, and rapid acceleration. What makes amusement park rides so much fun is the forces your body experiences when you're on them. It also may not have helped that many of our visits were during food festivals (like Brew & BBQ) in the Action Zone, which further concealed the attraction.Īll photos thanks to and © Coaster Circuits.Understanding amusement park physics is a great way to give you an appreciation of the dynamics of the various rides. If you did not know the ride was there, it was easy to miss. The ride was actually in a weird location, tucked downhill behind Coasters Drive-In, and well concealed behind landscaping. ![]() Orbiter resided in the Action Zone portion of the park near Behemoth. There are no immediate plans for a replacement attraction on that plot of land. ![]() As you know, these decisions are difficult ones, but we regularly evaluate our rides and consider downtime, resources required for ongoing maintenance and overall guest satisfaction. Orbiter was officially removed from the Canada’s Wonderland this past weekend.Ĭanada’s Wonderland has later confirmed “Yes, Orbiter had its last season in 2018 and is currently being dismantled and removed from the park. Though the ride was later seen in pieces in the parking lot where Yukon Striker pieces were being staged. Thanks to some insight from Amusement Insiders, who flies a drone adjacent to Canada’s Wonderland during the off-season, Brendon noticed the Orbiter was being deconstructed, though at the time of discovery, it was uncertain whether this was for routine maintenance or not. Guests can review the historical Sol Loco/Orbiter location on our Canada’s Wonderland maps. The ride was temporarily removed during the 2006 season under Paramount’s ownership, but when Cedar Fair took over Canada’s Wonderland the Orbiter was saved and reconstructed. In 2002, the Sol Loco name and theming was dropped and the ride renamed Orbiter. Orbiter was also known as Sol Loco with a Mexican theme from 1981 until 2002. The ride was very similar to the Witches Wheel (Cedar Point) that was removed near the end of the 2018 season. When Canada’s Wonderland opened in 1981, one of the rides was a HUSS Skylab, or Giant Enterprise, comprised of 15 gondolas. One of the many reasons we LOVE visiting Canada’s Wonderland is because of all the amazing flat rides with many guests will not find at any other Cedar Fair parks.
